THE V&A VILLAGE FETE 2008
EVENT IDENTITY
——
‘Friday Late Village Fete’ is the V&A and Scarlet Projects’ contemporary take on the traditional English fete, providing an extraordinary array of creative fun, wildly imaginative events and rather silly games. It’s a place where leading designers roam freely with up-and-coming young talent in (mostly) perfect harmony. We were asked by the wonderful Scarlet Projects to design the graphic identity for 2008 and work with exhibition designer Mark Garside on the space. Our concept, 'Village Fete Goes POP!', was based around the familiar party feature of balloons and the onomatopoeic words they could make when they pop. We asked each designer the question: "If your stall was a balloon, what sound would it make if it popped?" The submitted words found their way into the programme and onto the balloons that formed the A2 poster.

THE PROGRAMME
We were challenged to design a format that would contain information about the event, its sponsors and the forty participating designers’ stalls and games. We designed a 16pp map fold programme with the A2 poster on the reverse.

THE SPACE
To continue the POP! theme we brought in green and white super-sized helium weather balloons to float around the space. The balloon graphic from the programme was used as signage between the V&A entrance and the courtyard space.

HELIOKE
As designers of the event we got our own stall, which made us very happy and led to the birth of Helioke, a helium-fueled karaoke bar. Participants chose a track from our song books and were given a helium filled balloon as their track started. We even had a dry ice machine for those power ballad moments. Not that we sang any power ballads of course. We’d never do that.
