Tronik Youth, aka Neil Parnell, has been producing remixes for bands such as the Gossip, The Rakes, Franz & Shape and Goose for years. He asked us to design the 12" sleeves of his first and second releases. Following conversations with him about the then current glut of retro and new rave visuals in music, we agreed we wanted to avoid this aesthetic. He found a napkin he liked with an old 17th century etching of a country/farmyard scene, and so we developed a visual style for the first sleeve that we nicknamed ‘Olde Rave’. It consisted of a soft pastel gradient overprinted with the scanned black gritty etching artwork and was printed as a wrap around. The weighty title of his second single "Life Cry Live Die" summed up the life experience of a person, and we represented these four states by photographing human hands, each acting out a word.
