Bompas & Parr — culinary curators at the intersection of art, architecture and food -— approached us to design a publication that supported the event and also stood alone, meaning it could be distributed elsewhere and sold after the event. The book was to be self published and the first showcase of the newly formed Bompas & Parr Editions.
About half of the books content was to be recipes, combined with variety of articles, photo essays, images and texts commissioned from a plethora of interesting creatives, foodies and architects. The book needed a design that celebrated fruit, was accessible to a wide audience and brought together the variety of content in a cohesive way to create something substantial and that would be kept.
We used close ups photos of four different fruit for the covers: African Cucumber, Blood Orange, Watermelon and Kiwi. Each fruits skin wrapped on the front and back cover and the fruits flesh as the inside covers. We represented each section of the book with a fruit sticker and designed a series that were distorted and half-toned to recreate the printing distortion often seen in the little glossy stickers found on fruit. These were used throughout as section titles with a peel-able one on the cover. The book is all set in Antique Olive, a suitably fruity and fun typeface. To add even more fruit to the salad, we highlighted every fruit mentioned in the text in the colour of that fruit; banana in yellow, blueberry in blue etc. for a full-on Tutti Frutti effect.
