Mat Collishaw

“This Is Not An Exit” saw Mat Collishaw’s brilliant return to painting with a series of large scale works that are modernist abstracts, hyper real blown up empty cocaine wrappers made from torn up coloured paper magazine advertisements and monuments to nothingness. The show takes its name from a line in the novel American Psycho, a satire about Wall Street excess, and echoes the illusion in the trompe l’oeil technique in the painting and the unfulfilling aspect of cocaine.
The line from American Psycho is observed in a piece of signage and we took this reference to inform our type choice and layout. The invite featured a heavily cropped detail of one of the works (to convey the return to painting) printed on textured uncoated card, and the title typography printed on metallic mirror card to reference the paraphernalia of cocaine and to be at the same time empty but full of whatever is reflected into it. This came with an after party gold card printed and typeset like credit cards and further layer the banking and cocaine references.
