We were asked by YCN to overhaul the format and content of their annual, taking it from its existing form as a showcase of student award entries to a content heavy summary of all the ideas, work and adventures they’d embarked on that year. Our strategy was to commission all the content, set briefs to illustrators, art direct photo shoots and inform all the content in a way that demonstrated, rather than documented, their diverse capabilities.
Physically, we changed the format to that of a traditional comic book or glossy magazine annual, with a hard glossy cover and thin gloss and uncoated papers inside. The content was arranged into sections with all the copy confined to a one colour beginning summary. This allowed maximum space for the reproduction of images. The grid devised was versatile enough to allow each section a very different feel with the layouts referencing the theme for the section. Finally we commissioned 10 illustrators to create title stickers for the cover. A pack containing a selection of these is adhered to the cover, allowing the owner to hand finish their own personal copy.
