We were invited by Grafik Magazine to participate in ‘Olympik’, an exhibition of posters celebrating Olympic sports that was held at the amazing Russian Gymnasium in Kings Cross. Thirty-nine designers / studios were given a sport at random to represent in their poster and we were given Beach Volleyball. It seemed to us that people have found it hard to take Beach Volleyball seriously in its relatively short career as an Olympic sport. You only have to do a Google image search to discover that it is not the sport itself that attracts the most attention but its uniform. Initially we wanted to get away from bikinis so we began to experiment with sand as a medium to draw with. We worked with spray adhesive and hand cut paper stencils, blending layers of coloured sand to build up an image. The technique created some really interesting results but was too hard to control and the efforts sat just the wrong side of naïve. So we wrote a text piece titled ‘There is more to Beach Volleyball than just Bums’. It outlined the rules of the sport using as many bum related puns and innuendoes as we could cram into a small passage.
