Discipline is a new publication celebrating the most interesting makers of film, art, fashion, design, interiors, music, dining and more. The brilliant award winning agency Blink came to us to help establish their own self published title and position it so that it could be distributed to independent books stores and galleries as well as sent direct to agencies, clients and collaborators. The idea was to create something that was packed full of great content so it had longevity and sold at a low price point so it felt very accessible.
Blink were established in the 1980s in Soho and have grown as an agency to produce a wide range of work for a varied clients. Aspects of this wide output can be described as tongue-in-cheek and ultra-modern and we wanted to convey this wide-range and present them as both characterful and also digital. We designed a mast head set in a customised version of the 1966 typeface Carosel and paired this with one of Emigre’s ‘course’ or pixelated fonts. The extended swirling psychedelic qualities of Carosel offset by the condensed pixelated font created a unique tone.
As the publication focussed on the creatives/makers we wanted to feature an original piece of work that showcased Blinks creatives and allowed us to see some real impactful craftsmanship.
For Issue 1, the “Power Lunch Issue”, and we conceived the idea of using our paper sponsors stocks to create a still life cover expertly crafted by Blinks own Kyle Bean.
