Bill Viola

The centre piece, from which the exhibition took its name, was a nine screen grid of videos depicting figures perpetually repeating various futile activities - a man pulls a heavy cart up a hill only to pause and let it roll back down to the bottom and then start the process again. We took this idea of the compression and release of tension to inform the typography and used a combination of a condensed font for titles that precede the work and an extended font for texts that follow the work. Three stills from each video are shown in sequential pages and show the beginning, middle and end of each loop. The black pages allow the film stills to maintain their atmosphere and mimic the experience of entering a video installation. The book binding allowed the pages to lay flat meaning film stills could run across the spread.
