We designed this deluxe box set for the enigmatic British electronic musician Darren J. Cunningham best known under the moniker Actress. Purporting to be his final release this box set packages fourth album Ghettoville with his first Hazyville (on both vinyl and CD) and continues to explore the Actress visual language.
This reissue of Hazyville has a matt black triangular die-cut slipcase revealing a smokey image of a playground. Ghettoville — described as the bleached out and black tinted conclusion — features a matt white slip case with a square die-cut revealing the beautiful — and suitably coded — artwork of William Stein. The black/white colour palette and set of basic geometric shapes triangle, square, circle provide a series of opposites and contribute to, but do not reveal, the Actress enigma. A 12 inch forty-page book of abstract images (one removed from the layered arrangement with each page turned) provides a new and unique art book and serves more to obscure than illuminate the producer.
The package is finished with high end materials and suitably minimal touches. An ‘elephant skin’ textured box has a simple gloss white triangle foiled onto its lid. The slip cases and inner sleeves are all tactile matt card. A single monospaced font is used throughout, appears only at one point size and is foiled onto the box and slip cases. The track listings appear in full on the slip cases and are crossed out with X’s on inner sleeves to mark the tracks on each record. The vinyls are also an inverse of each other, one black record with white label and one white with black label.
