‘Friday Late Village Fete’ is the V&A and Scarlet Projects’ contemporary take on the traditional English fete, providing an extraordinary array of creative fun, wildly imaginative events and rather silly games. It’s a place where leading designers roam freely with up-and-coming young talent in (mostly) perfect harmony. We were asked by the wonderful Scarlet Projects to design the graphic identity for 2008 and work with exhibition designer Mark Garside on the space. Our concept, ‘Village Fete Goes POP!’, was based around the familiar party feature of balloons and the onomatopoeic words they could make when they pop. We asked each designer the question: “If your stall was a balloon, what sound would it make if it popped?” The submitted words found their way into the programme and onto the balloons that formed the A2 poster.
