Book design

Blackdog Publishing asked us to design a book documenting No Wave and we jumped at the chance. Written by Marc Masters, the publication traces the history of this noisy and uncompromising New York music genre from early pioneers, like Suicide and Richard Hell, to forgotten treasures like Red Transistor and Bush Tetras.
‘No Wave’ charts every crack and crevice of a surprisingly diverse movement.
Our design approach was distinctly No Wave in that it took something American and establishment and messed it up. The type was set in Franklin Gothic, a font used for the American phone books of the time and the titles were set in a redrawn cut of the bold.
This was combined with simple grids and lo-fi collages, allowing the extensive archive of images full freedom to set the tone for this tome.
